Workshop: “Connecting Design Thinking Cycle and SDG’s”
Chess Gundersen is currently a Lower School and Middle School design teacher (PYP and MYP) at the International School of Helsinki. He introduced ‘design’ to the Lower School over the last two years as an exciting opportunity to get students doing more hands-on and engaging projects. This year he has expanded into the Middle Years (grades 6-8). He has focussed on the design thinking process and creating more hands-on learning opportunities to support and enrich the curriculum. The focus has been on creating a ‘maker-mindset’ and culture at ISH by working on developing maker capacities such as ‘looking closely’, ‘exploring complexity’ and ‘finding opportunities’ which will help to develop a sensitivity to design (Harvard – Project Zero). He hopes to challenge students to be future problem solvers, innovators, tinkerers and makers through both the Project Zero framework as well as the Design Thinking Cycle (developed by Stanford University).
